My grandparents were very thrifty people. I know that is where I get my "why buy it, when you can just make it" attitude. I imagine that same thought inspired my Papa to create these wooden looms for my Na to lap weave potholders and placemats. I don't ever remember seeing her make them, but I certainly remember they were all over their house. I remember they were dark brown and gold in color and when I placed my hand on them, I could feel the hard bumps inside where each intersection of the weave was tied.

Lap weaving is a craft using yarn and a loom small enough to fit on your lap. The weaving and tying skills used are simple and make for a wonderful craft for kids as well as adults. The projects can be completed fairly quickly, often in just an hour for the smaller patterns and a few hours for the larger ones. The finished product makes for a great item to create for craft fairs. It is also a wonderful craft for using up leftover yarn, the combinations of designs and patterns you can make with different fibers are truly endless.
NEW Pattern: Felted Pouch (6" hexagon loom)
NEW Pattern
Rollover image for detail
I am eager to begin developing patterns using a hexagon loom that are not the traditional items created (potholders, placemats & coasters). This is the first of many items I have thought up and plan to add to this website, so check back often for new ones. If you would like to be notified when new patterns are posted, send me your name and e-mail using the form on the contact page (don't forget to check the "Stay Updated" box) or visit the LapWeaving.Info Community Forum, where I will post new patterns as they become available.
I find lap weaving to be a very satisfying and meditative experience. The rhythm created in weaving the loom feels almost like playing a musical instrument. The tying is a bit more tedious, but once you get the hang of it, time passes smoothly and in the end you have a beautiful hand made item.
I recently discovered that it is difficult to obtain instructions on how to use hexagon weaving looms. So, I decided to develop this site and share the information that I do have. If you have any patterns and/or instructions that you would like to share with the LapWeaving.Info community, please contact me.
