Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch Pattern

This pattern is for a felted pouch using a 6" hexagon weaving loom and 100% wool yarn.

I was very excited about the final results of this adorable little pouch. The finished size is about five inches, perfect for carrying a few small items (cell phone and keys) or for use as a pretty gift wrap for a fragile item (a small jewelry box would fit nice inside).

In order to make a felted piece, you must use 100% natural fiber yarn. To create the pouch, first weave two separate hexagon pieces using the basic weave pattern. For this particular piece, I wove one layer of Sensations Licorice yarn and then tyed all intersections using Patons Classic Merino Wool in olive. The image to the right shows the front side of both pieces.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch

Next take both pieces and place them on top of each other with the insides facing out, once you sew the edges together, you will then turn it inside out and the correct pattern will be on the outside.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
Beginning at top left corner (see above image with blue arrows), sew the edges by threading your yarn through the existing loops of both hexagon pieces. When you come back up with the yarn, put it through the loop as if tying an intersection. See photo to right for detail.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
Continue sewing the edges together until you reach the other side, parallel to where you began. NOTE: Do not sew the entire piece closed. You must leave one straight edge of the hexagon untouched, this will be the opening of the pouch.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
The photo to the right shows the sewn pouch, still inside out. To be certain that the edges will be closed, sew from one corner to the opposite corner and then back again.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch

Using scissors, cut the loops only on the top edge (the opening of the pouch).Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
When felting, all small holes will be closed in the fiber bonding process. For this piece, we need to leave some holes open for the pull string. Evenly thread a bulky acrylic or cotton yarn through the holes along the top of the pouch to prevent them from closing up.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
Crochet a single chain long enough to use as a pull string, this will be felted as well, so be sure to make it a little longer, you can always trim it later.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
This is my favorite part and a great motivation to do some laundry! Place both items (pouch and crocheted chain) inside a zippered pillowcase and toss in the washing machine. To conserve water and energy, I throw in a load of towels, be sure to set the washer to hot/cold. The photo to the right shows both items after one cycle in the washing machine.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
Remove the acrylic yarn and thread crocheted chain through remaining holes. Slide a wooden bead through the pull string and trim to desired length. The image to the right is a photo of the final piece.Instructions for Hexagon Weaving Loom Felted Pouch
